Chat backgrounds
Give any chat its own picture — opening it fades the whole app to that background.
Every chat can have its own background image. Open that chat and the whole app gently fades to the picture, so the conversation sits in a world of its own; leave, and it fades back. It works on Your log, on every view you pinned to your chats, and on each AI agent's chat — each one remembers its own picture.
A chat with no picture of its own simply shows your usual app background — see The app background for the full order.
Setting a background
Open a chat and click the ⋯ menu at the top-right of its header — or just click the chat's profile picture; both open the same options menu.
- Set background (or Change background) opens a picker with two tabs:
- Gallery — the same curated images you can use for page banners. Click one and it applies instantly.
- Upload — choose an image from your device (PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF, up to 10 MiB). Paste or drag works too.
- Remove background leaves this chat with no picture at all — just your background colour. It is always offered, even when the picture you are looking at came from somewhere else (see below).
A pinned view — a chat you added from a view's "Show in chat" — has its own background too, and picking one there changes only that chat.
A new pinned view starts out showing the same picture as Your log, so your chats match without any setting up. The moment you pick a picture for it, or remove its background, that chat keeps its own answer and stops following the log. The picture belongs to the pin: if you remove the view from your chats and add it again, it starts fresh.
The same menu also lets you work with the chat's picture: View profile picture opens it enlarged, Change profile picture lets you pick a new one (an image, emoji, or icon), and on AI agent chats Edit AI assistant settings jumps to the agent manager.
The image is washed toward your background colour automatically, so it reads as a backdrop rather than competing with your messages — and it adjusts for light and dark themes on its own. Backgrounds sync across your devices the same way your entries do.
A default for every chat
You don't have to set each chat by hand. Whatever background the app is wearing shows through any chat that hasn't been given one — so set one picture in Settings → Appearance → Background and every chat picks it up.
The order is: the chat's own picture wins; a chat you told to have no picture stays plain; otherwise the app's background shows (your Appearance pick, then your theme's).
Ask your AI to make you one
If image generation is turned on (Settings → AI settings), you can just ask an agent to generate a background for a chat instead of picking from the gallery — describe what you want and it comes back ready to set.
